Flood threatened rabbit species west of Modesto. How experts plucked the animals to safety

Fumika Takahashi recalled a gray January day when she set out to rescue rabbits. The federal wildlife biologist kayaked along the lower San Joaquin River, which had risen close to the treetops. She and other experts hoped to find a rare species called the riparian brush rabbit. “The floodwaters came up very quickly, so a lot of the rabbits were stranded in trees, or on logs and floating debris, because there wasn’t enough time for them to make it to high ground,” Takahashi said Friday afternoon. She works for the US Fish and Wildlife Service, which ended up catching about…

Pet rabbits need freedom to exercise, study finds

Credit: Ksd5/Wikipedia Pet rabbits have higher levels of the stress hormone—corticosterone—and show rebound activity when kept in small hutches with restricted exercise, new research led by the University of Bristol Vet School has found. The research highlights the importance that pairs of pet rabbits should have the freedom to exercise outside their home enclosure even when they are kept in hutches larger than the traditional size. Rabbits are a popular choice for many families, with an estimated 900,000 rabbits kept as pets in the UK. Several studies have looked at the housing needs…

Bunnies discovered in Esquimalt raise concerns

Just ahead of Easter, animal rescue centers on Vancouver Island are overwhelmed with rabbits. It’s bad news for residents of an Esquimalt neighborhood who recently spotted domestic rabbits in the area. “The kids noticed [the mother] about a month ago,” said Lorraine Nygaard who lives in Esquimalt. “And then boom, all of a sudden there’s seven baby bunnies next door,” she said. The rabbits were making their home on the construction site for the Rosemeade Inn along Lampson Street. Nygaard said she is trying to start a veggie garden and keeping the rascally rabbits out would be impossible. “Bunnies can…

caring for rabbits; the do’s and don’ts of Easter bunnies

WELLINGTON COUNTY- It’s generally accepted that rabbits are adorable creatures. They hop around, are most active in the early hours of the afternoon and are known to be quiet pets, making them a great fit for families with children. When properly cared for they make loving and loyal companions, but require much more care than most people realize. It is estimated that as many as 80% of all rabbits purchased at Easter die or are abandoned before their first birthday. Too often owners are unprepared for the commitment involved in keeping them. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to…

Easter warning after more than 160 rabbits rescued from one garage

The RSPCA has rescued more than 160 rabbits from one garage amid what it describes as a “rabbit crisis”. The owners, in Great Easton, Leicestershire, had started with just four rabbits but allowed them to breed out of control. Animal charities including the RSCPA say they are dealing with a huge influx in abandoned rabbits due to breeding and the cost-of-living crisis. They advise adopting rabbits rather than buying from breeders or pet shops. They also urge people to get rabbits neutered so they cannot breed, and so the females don’t get uterine cancer. RSPCA inspector Richard Durant, who helped…

Rabbits are my spirit animal, and that’s how my great-grandchildren will likely know me

First Person is a daily personal piece submitted by readers. Have a story to tell? See our guidelines at tgam.ca/essayguide. Illustration by Mary Kirkpatrick I was pregnant with twins and living in Yellowknife when my then-husband brought me a handmade gift from the far north to celebrate. It was a rabbit made out of duffle, wearing an Inuit amauti with two baby rabbits tucked into its hood. I already had an affinity for bunnies so it was a fitting gift, but looking back I saw that it could also be the genesis of Spirit Rabbit, who has come to play…
